At heart, RHD is an attempt to encourage an understanding of culture that is participatory and public, in which cultural interactions are not divided strictly along the lines of active creator and passive audience. We also seek to to chip away at the consumerist model of culture wherein art and music are primarily things to be bought and sold.

Particularly, we enjoy challenging notions about cultural ownership and "intellectual property" though the production of works that incorporate bits and pieces of other people's work - the collage, the cover, and the remix are some of our favorite recombinant forms. Generally speaking, we prefer the dynamic to the static, the reference to the plug, and the community to the audience.

As an alternative to buying culture, we propose collaborative culture creation. That's why so much of this site is about making things: text, images, music, and so on. Sometimes these works speak explicity to the ideas that we think are important, but just as often we're just simply producing for the joy of making our own culture - the pleasure of the DIY process, because participation is a better way of building community than consumption.

So, while we are glad to have visitors observing the site, we are even more excited to have visitors actively involved in the elaboration and expansion of the site. Here then are the various established sections of RHD, all of which are open for collaboration:

# For a more extensive explanation of the ideas behind this site, you can visit our manifesto. Like anything else on this site this is a work in progress and we welcome questions, additions, and critiques.

# We also have a blog where we post items pertinent to RHD (a very broad category). Like most blogs, we encourage discussion in the form of comments. We also welcome ideas and submissions for posts.

# The founders of RHD, Mr. Bandwidth and Mr. Romance, both display their audio wares on this site as well. We're both looking for musical collaboration, either in the form of tracks to remix, or remixes of our own tracks. Futhermore, anybody interested in a sample swap, or any other ideas for audio collaboration are welcome to contact us.

# The Rabbit Hole is the broadest of our collaborative, recombinant projects. We often refer to it as a labyrinth - a hypermedia maze of image, text and sound with hidden passages, vague boundaries and no discernable center. Please feel free to send in audio, visual, or textual items for inclusion in (or linking to) the maze.

# Finally, we are compiling a compendium of uncited works - a reading/listening/viewing list of items that have influenced and inspired us in the creation of this site. As you might expect by this point, we are happy to hear about items that we should add.

Any questions, ideas, or critiques that don't fit into these categories can also be sent to us via e-mail: contact (at) recombinanthumandragon (dotcom).
